I’ve
decided to de-activate my Facebook account. I've just gone a few weeks without signing
in to Facebook to see what life without it would be like, and after having been off for
a bit I’m ready to de-activate it altogether. The fact that not having Facebook
sounded crazy to me, as if something bad would happen if I didn’t have that way
to keep in contact with people, is reason enough for me to step away from it. Getting
rid of Facebook poses me absolutely no risk of falling out of touch with the
people that are an important part of my life. More or less, for me it comes
down to the fact that this website takes up too many of my thoughts and too
much of my time for being something that’s absolutely unnecessary.
Facebook’s very obviously an easy, great tool to keep in touch with people all over the place. But in the way that it disguises itself as an important part of our lives and for the way that it replaces more personal forms of communication for some of us, it frustrates me. I’ll likely be back
on in a few months when I can use and think about it sparingly, but for now I’m
ready to take a break.
